HUD Spends $4 – $6 Billion a Year on Energy Bills

Each year, American tax payers pay approximately $4 – $6 Billion on energy bills for affordable housing programs. President Obama’s FY2016 budget proposes $49.3 Billion to be allocated to HUD, an increase of 8% over 2015. In the budget, it suggests continued funding for the Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) program and proposes a Utilities Conservation Pilot that would encourage Public Housing Authorities to develop ways to conserve energy and decrease cost. With smart thermostats and lights, there could potentially be up to $1 Billion in annual energy cost savings for tax payers.
